St. Paul's Nursery School, Brinnington Rise. "Besides its architectural interest, St. Paul's Nursery School, on Brinnington Rise, is worthy of inclusion in this series because it is one of a group of school buildings on that site which illustrates the swing of responsibility in the past half-century from the church, to the local authority for the provision of accomodation for education. When the new St. Paul's Infant School, which adjoins the Nursery School was built, the old school, at the junction of Great Portwood Street and Carrington Road was closed, and church social events are now held in the new school, a case of the former hosts becoming guests. The nursery school has a commanding position on the top of the hill, yet it is not conspicuous, Mr. John S. Rank, the borough architect and his staff, had to decide whether to design a building which either dominated the hill, or, one which surrendered itself to it.
